While traditional email is ideal for one-on-one interaction, email lists advance the concept a step further by disseminating a single message simultaneously to a group of people. Email lists are typically configured for use either as one-way announcement lists or discussion lists. The main difference is that only the list owner or editor can write to a one-way list, whereas every list member can write to a discussion list.
To be able to efficiently manage email lists, it is important to use professional email list management software. This type of software performs many functions that would otherwise have to be managed manually, such as list creation and configuration, adding and removing subscribers, handling email bounces, maintaining archives and so on. Manual list management almost led to the extinction of email lists because it required considerable manpower to perform these tasks.
When an email list is created, its email address is used to post messages to the list. Once a message is sent, it is delivered to the central server where the email list management software resides. The software then automatically distributes the message to all subscribers on the list. List modifications as well as subscribing and unsubscribing to a list can be done through the list's Web interface. The email list management software automatically updates the list's records and sends a confirmation email to the person who requested the changes.
